Low maintenance does not mean ignored
Clock Tower Care and Maintenance
Stable timber, durable coatings and considered detailing greatly reduce maintenance, but a simple inspection routine protects the tower, clock equipment and receiving roof for the long term.
Recommended inspection
Carry out a visual inspection at least once each year and after any severe storm, impact or building work close to the tower. High-level inspection must only be completed using safe access and competent persons.
Check the following
- obvious damage to paint, joints, panels, louvres, finials or weathervanes;
- signs of water entering from the building roof, flashings or supporting curb;
- debris blocking drainage or ventilation openings;
- loose external fixings or movement caused by the receiving structure;
- clock hands running freely and faces remaining secure;
- internal condensation, pests or water staining where access is provided; and
- lead, copper or fibreglass roof details for accidental damage.
Cleaning
Clean painted surfaces only when required, using a soft cloth or sponge, clean water and a mild non-abrasive detergent. Do not use pressure washers, aggressive solvents, abrasive pads or metal tools on the coating.
Coating damage
Although the two-pack epoxy finish is selected for long service, chips or cuts caused by lifting, installation, maintenance work or impact should be repaired promptly using the specified compatible system. Leaving bare or damaged areas untreated may invalidate relevant guarantee cover.
Clock servicing
Clock mechanisms and controls should be inspected and serviced in accordance with the equipment supplier’s guidance. Keep internal access clear and isolate electrical supplies before competent servicing work.
Records
Keep dated photographs, inspection notes, invoices and details of any repairs. These records make future care easier and may be required when assessing a guarantee claim.
Project-specific guidance
The final tower specification may include additional instructions for the selected roof material, coating, clock equipment, environment or access arrangement. Project-specific written guidance takes precedence over this general page.
